Colour Book

Colour Book Final Project
Vienna Lang

This project is a representation of colour using lipstick. I took apart a tissue box and used the pieces to stamp individual lipstick colours on tissues. I used a wooden tissue box as my book cover and stained it red because I love the boldness of red lipstick.

The final tissue in the box is the "colophon, " which has swatches of all the colours I used for the lipstick stamps. This was a happy accident. I used a single tissue to wipe off the excess colour from my lips before I prepared for the next lipstick colour. Once I was finished, I noticed that this tissue looked like it was an index or map, so I felt that I should include it and call it a colophone.

I really love how this project turned out. I especially love the inclusion of the glitter to make the project feel more like me.

My favourite comment on this project came from my dad. When I described using a box as a book cover and tissues as book pages, my father's response was "that's like taking a piece of bread and butter, paring it with a bowl of soup and calling it a sandwich." I think he's right, that using a tissue box in a book project is untraditional but that's exactly what I was aiming for in this final project. I wanted go beyond our typical vision of a book and challenge myself with new materials. I am very proud of what I came up with and excited to do more book making in the future.

If you look closely you can see a hint of glitter on the lipstick.

I imagine that the owner of the lipstick is getting ready for a night out with her girlfriends and can't decide which lipstick colour she wants to wear. So she tries on all her lipsticks and swatches the colours on her tissues. After she's decided on a colour, she sprays glitter in her hair, and the excess glitter falls to her pile of tissues.
